New PC Workstation

Late last year I got ChatGPT involved in my search for a new personal computer that would be robust enough for 2D and 3D CAD in my home office.

The GPT helped with the requirements for the system and then I searched Amazon.com for an affordable system that would meet the requirements.

Here is the dialog from the GPT about whether the system I selected would meet my requirements:

The Envision S13 SFF PC described is a robust system and should perform well for running AutoCAD and SolidWorks, especially for standard design and modeling tasks. Let’s break down its suitability for your requirements:

Key Specifications:
1. **Processor: Intel 16-core i9-12900K**
   - The i9-12900K is a powerful processor with 16 cores, and its high single-thread performance is excellent for CAD software like AutoCAD and SolidWorks, which rely heavily on single-threaded tasks.

2. **Memory: 32GB DDR5 RAM**
   - 32GB of RAM is more than sufficient for 2D and 3D CAD work, as well as handling multiple applications simultaneously. DDR5 adds the benefit of faster data transfer speeds compared to DDR4.

3. **Storage: 3TB HDD + 512GB NVMe SSD**
   - The **512GB NVMe SSD** is ideal for fast boot times and storing CAD applications for quick loading.
   - The **3TB HDD** provides ample storage for project files, backups, and other data.

4. **Graphics: HDMI & DisplayPort (Assumed to Use Integrated or Discrete GPU)**
   - For CAD work, you'll need a **dedicated GPU**, such as an NVIDIA Quadro or GeForce RTX card, which are designed to handle the graphical demands of SolidWorks and AutoCAD efficiently. The system description doesn’t mention a discrete GPU, so you may need to confirm if one is included or plan to add one.

5. **Connectivity: 10 USB Ports, WiFi 6, RJ45**
   - The abundance of USB ports and modern connectivity options (WiFi 6, RJ45) will support peripherals like external drives and 3D mice, which are commonly used in CAD workflows.

6. **Operating System: Windows 11 Pro**
   - Windows 11 Pro is compatible with the latest versions of AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

7. **Monitor Support**
   - With **HDMI and DisplayPort**, the PC can support dual monitors. Ensure your monitors are at least 1080p resolution or higher (ideally 1440p or 4K for CAD work).

---

Potential Concerns:
- **Graphics Card (GPU)**:
   - If the system does not include a discrete GPU, you'll need to purchase one, as integrated graphics (like Intel UHD or Iris Xe) are insufficient for intensive 3D modeling or rendering in SolidWorks. A **NVIDIA Quadro (professional-grade)** or **GeForce RTX 3060 or higher** is recommended for optimal performance.

- **Compact Form Factor (SFF)**:
   - Ensure the small form factor (SFF) can accommodate upgrades, such as a dedicated GPU, as some compact designs have space limitations.

---

Conclusion:
The **Envision S13 SFF PC** is a strong choice for AutoCAD and SolidWorks if it includes or allows
for a discrete GPU upgrade. Double-check the GPU situation before finalizing your purchase. If it lacks a discrete GPU, plan to add a suitable graphics card to unlock the full potential of this system for CAD applications.

I am running the system with two 27-inch gaming monitors.  I have already picked out a graphics accelerator card that uses the Nvidia GPU chip.  A new 850 volt-amp UPS supports the new system.

This computer has 10 USB ports and because the mouse and keyboard are Bluetooth, they only use one USB port for both of them!

I spent all weekend transferring files from the old computer to the new computer.  I had to move over 100,000 files.  We have most of the software installed that we want to use.

Plus, while I had the work table pulled away from the wall, I took everything off of the wall behind the work station, spackled all holes, sanded, and painted an accent wall with a lime green paint.  It really gives the room more energy!
