Memorial Day Weekend

We went to The Egg & I for breakfast on Saturday morning.  Then we went back to the house and
picked up Buddy for his 10:00 am veterinary check-up with Dr. Ballester at Petsmart.   Buddy remains is very good health as he approaches his 13th birthday!  He got his vaccinations caught up and we purchased 6 months supply of Heartguard.
Bob at the road sign.

Everyone got back into the car and we drove out of town for Memorial Day Weekend.

We drove to Hickory, NC and stayed in the Red Roof Inn.  It was cheap, but man, what a dump!

It rained most of the way to Hickory and it rained very hard at times.  Later I took the car to Shell to fill the gas tank.  As I was filling the tank the car stalled out.  After I re-started the car and drove out of there it stalled three more times on the way back to the motel.

Behind 190 Yukon Queen.
In the parking lot I tried to race the engine, but it would hesitate.  I decided to add Chevron Techron gas treatment to the tank.  I happened to have two bottles of it.  As soon as I did this the engine started running smoothly again.

It only takes 1 ounce of water in 1 gallon of gas to make the car run rough and hesitate.

We were afraid it was going to rain all weekend and that would ruin our trip to Tweetsie Railroad.  If it rained on Sunday our plan was to go to the Hickory Furniture Mart instead.  But it turned out really nice and sunny.  We drove up to Blowing Rock in the mountains easily and spent part of the day at Tweetsie Railroad.

On the chair lift.
For us, it wasn't really worth the $45 per person entrance fee.  For someone with kids, I could see more value because there are more activities for kids there.

We drove back to Hickory and spent the afternoon in the furniture mart.  Bob was a trooper - he walked through all four floors of the furniture mart.  We saw lots of things that we liked, but the prices were also pretty high.

For dinner we got a pizza and brought it back to the room.

This morning we had breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then loaded the car for the trip back to Cary.  It took about 2-1/2 hours to drive back home.  At home I got the laundry started, vacuumed, and then rested.  In the evening we went to Food Lion to get some grocery.

This will be a short work week and we have a party at Tom Lovelace's house in Apex on Saturday afternoon.

Another Week

Bob stands at the rear of our lot.
Another great week has passed at Avista Pharma.

This week I finished up my 13th silica column and condensed the product down in the rotovap.  The total yield was less than the chemist wanted, but we made about 7.3 Kg of the yellow oily product.

A chemist named Peter was working in 414 with me in the 100 liter reactor.  Peter is very messy and works unsafely sometimes.  We survived the week and I am glad that his project is done.  He was cleaning the equipment and his dishes when I left.

I had a very large steel storage cabinet on casters delivered today.  This cabinet has 42 plastic storage bins inside of it to hold all of the parts needed on the De Dietrich reactors in 413 and 414.  I was surprised at the size of it!

Also, stainless steel mobile stairs were delivered today, but they disappointed me.  I was expecting shiny stainless steel, but what was delivered was a satin finish that had been sand blasted.  Oh well, as long as Ken is happy with them, then everyone else will be happy with them.

I succeeded in sorting and organizing all of the drawers in the bench cabinets this week too.  Sorted, cleaned, reorganized, and labeled.

The loan officer called me this week to set up our meeting.  We are going to meet in Apex at the model home on Wednesday evening after I get off of work.  Because of the proximity to I-540, I can be there 15 minutes after I get off of work.  I will only spend 11 minutes on the highway!

Our house will be at 2037 Whitesmith Drive, Apex, NC.  It will be Barn Red with Brown shutters.

6 more buildings the same size as ours will be built at Hempstead in the coming months.  Each time a new building is starting the price goes up $5000.  So, with the $40,000 we are putting down, we will have almost $70,000 in equity by the time the community is built out!  With over 1 Million more people expected in the Triangle area by 2020, a housing investment is a good bet.

Now we have Memorial Day Weekend.  Tomorrow morning Buddy has an appointment with Dr. Ballester for his annual check up.  We will also order heart worm preventive for him.

After we finish with the vet, we are going to Hickory, NC for Saturday night and Sunday night.  We are going to visit Tweetsie Railroad near Boone, NC on Sunday, and if it is open, we will browse the Hickory Furniture Mart on Monday before returning home to Cary.

It will be a short work week next week!

New Construction

Floor plan for our new townhouse in Apex.
Once we felt that the house in Wyoming was going to sell for sure we began to casually browse Zillow.com looking at local houses.  One thing was starting to become clear - prices are only headed in one direction here and as more people arrive in the Triangle daily (1 Million expected by 2020), prices are going to continue to rise.  We needed to find a house to get into before we ended up priced out of the market.

After browsing some houses, we decided that it would be best for us to get a townhouse at this time.  I don't want to spend all of my free time mowing a yard and gardening.  In fact, I don't want to have to worry about exterior maintenance at all.  We located a couple of new construction town home communities near my place of work.  One was in an especially good location near Southpointe Mall in South Durham only five miles from work.  By the time we drove over there they only had one unit left - the model.  We walked through the model, but it wasn't our dream home, so we decided to keep looking.

We began looking at areas farther from work with good access to the highway.  I-540 can really shorten my commute.

I found a new community in Apex right behind the Beaver Creek Crossings Shopping Center called Hempstead.  This community is being developed by Ryan Homes.  The floor plans are named after classical music composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn.  There were two floor plans that looked affordable to us, but only one of them had a two-car garage - the Mozart.  We studied this model extensively online and took the virtual tour.

One of the best things about this community is its location - easy access to I-540, US-64, and NC-55.  Plus, there is lots of shopping and entertainment within walking distance of the front door.

On my way home from work last Tuesday, I passed my exit at Green Level West Rd and went two more miles down to US-64.  Here I got off and drove to the Sales Center.  Chris, the sales man took me right across the street to tour the Mozart model.

The first thing that surprised me was the second floor front entrance.  Chris told me that only hillside units have the second floor entry.  All of the others have the front door on the lower, garage level.  Just three more buildings are going to be built on the hillside.  I was pleased with the finishes in the model unit, but you have to remember that many of the features you see in the model are upgrades and these will end up costing more than the base price.

I stayed for about an hour and then left promising to return on Saturday with Bob so that he could take a walk through and so that we could investigate the house more thoroughly.

Saturday was a dreary and wet day with lots of rain showers.  We went to the Sales Center and Chris promptly took us across the street to the Mozart model.  We carefully went through the model house asking questions about which items were standard and which were options and how much the options would cost us.  We very quickly decided which items were must-haves and walked back across the street to make a deposit on the lot.

After working out how much the house and options would cost us per month, we put $2500 down on
Bob points out our SOLD lot.
the lot and agreed to initiate contact with the mortgage broker that the builder uses.   Chris took out a red "SOLD" sign and we walked back across the street in the rain to stick the red placard on the sign that displays which lots are available.  Our building is the next building they are going to start.  There are four homes in each building and they need to sell three of them before they may go to City Of Apex Planning Department to get a building permit.  We were the third home buyer in our building - 1034.

We went with the standard cabinets and granite counter tops.  We elected to have a double stainless steel kitchen sink (no additional cost).  The third floor, the basement rec room, and the stairs will all be carpeted.

If you purchase the side-by-side refrigerator-freezer from the builder it will cost $1810.  We decided to procure that ourselves.  We agreed to pay $400 to upgrade to a gas range.  We decided to purchase our own washer and dryer (at a savings).  We added a kitchen island for $2200.  We asked to have a French door in place of the standard sliding glass door to the balcony - $1500.  We asked to have the kitchen-dining hard flooring extended through the living room to cover the entire main floor - $4500.   We elected to have the builder install a garage door opener for $565.  We added an optional half-bath on the main floor - $4000.

With all of the options and with us placing 15% down, our monthly investment will be 20% less than our Cary, NC rent and our Clark, WY mortgage combined payments were.  Because of the local economy and the unique situation this housing market is in, we both feel that this house will be a good investment.

We went back into the model home and I flipped every light switch to see which ones were three-way switches and which electric receptacles were switch-controlled.  The switch-controlled outlets are installed upside-down.  I also pulled down the attic stairs and climbed up to see the furnace and hot water heater.

The house comes with a gas furnace, central air, and a gas on-demand hot water heater.  These are in the attic and there is a small floor about the size of the bathroom up there.  The rest of the attic is covered with blown-in fiberglass insulation.

Construction will begin on our building in the next few weeks, and the builder expects to have the house finished in December.  We will renew our lease through January.

We are very excited about this next step and the house is going to be beautiful!

Weekend

On Saturday morning we went out for breakfast, then we took the car to Hendrick Fiat Alfa-Romeo
Bob on the new mattress.
to have the oil changed and the tires rotated.  Next we stopped at Great Yarns so that Bob could get pointers on starting the sleeves on the little sweater he is knitting Jayla Daniels.  From Great Yarns we went up Glenwood Avenue and had lunch at Panera Bread.  Then we popped into Mattress Firm to shop for a new mattress.

We were in Mattress Firm about 20 minutes.  We decided on a mattress after trying four mattresses!  I kept telling the salesman, "Getting warmer", "Getting colder", until we arrived at the mattress that was most similar to what we used to have.  They delivered the new mattress on the same day and took our old mattress out.  We got free delivery and a free box spring too.

On Sunday we went out looking at houses.  We went to Durham and had lunch at The Pie Hole and then we continued to look at houses.  The development that I especially liked was already sold out except for the model.  We looked at the model, but it really isn't our dream home.  So we will continue to look.

We stopped at Target to get razor blades, a new dust ruffle for the bed, and a mattress cover.  I went into Office Depot and came out with a black ink cartridge for our printer, some pen cartridge refills, and a new computer chair.

Finally we went to Food Lion and got some grocery for the coming week.

Bob has physical therapy today in Raleigh.  He will be travelling by himself.  I will continue to work in Lab 414 today on silica columns.  I don't mind the columns and the rotovap, it's all of the equipment they want me to shop for an order, all of the organizing they want me to do, and everything else that there just doesn't seem to be time for.  That bothers me.  You can only work so fast before you start to be reckless.

This Friday is Pay Day, and I am happy about that!

Closing

On Monday the stainless steel tables for Lab 413-414 were delivered.  I got them out of Receiving, but I could not take them right into the lab because corrugated cardboard is not permitted in there.  So I unpacked them and carried all of the pieces for the two tables inside.  Jose assembled one of the tables in 10 minutes.  I put the other one together at the end of the day.  Because we bought these from Uline and we spent over $1200, I got a free gift of ceramic knives to take home!

Also delivered were some non-sparking brass drum wrenches.  I am getting tired of using vice grip pliers to open the bung caps on waste drums.  As a goodwill gesture, I gave one to Tim, the waste disposal guy.

I was given permission to order not one, but two, HEPA filter vacuum cleaners!  One for the GMP area and one for the non-GMP area.  I put that order in on Monday to Grainger.

There is now a clock hanging in 413.

I have been running silica columns each day and running the rotovap.  We completed the third column today.  I think I have 9 more columns to go.

After I finished the column I took the trash out of the room.  On the way back, the man from Receiving said that he had two big boxes with my name on them.  I go into Receiving to find two big 24"x24"x36" boxes.  I put them on a cart and take them to 413.

These boxes contained printed corrugated cartons - the vacuum cleaners I ordered on Monday!

In other news, we closed on the sale of 160 Brushland Drive, Clark, WY 82435 today.  The funds due to me at sale will be wired to my account tomorrow.  This is a huge relief to both of us.  Paying rent for an apartment in NC and maintaining the house in WY has made money a little tight for us.

We are going out for an ice cream cone to celebrate.

Week Four

Well, that wraps up three weeks at Avista.  I have busted my ass.  My boss is happy.  My bosses boss is happy.  He spoke of the 413-414 Kilo Lab, "I feel like I could bring Pat Walsh in here now."

We are still working on the Complexa project and Rick, Jose, and me were in 414 all day long.  We didn't even get a lunch!  We ran an open silica column for the first time and I will be running these for the next 6 or 7 days.

My first paycheck came on Thursday afternoon.  It was about 35% larger than the checks I was taking home from Burt's Bees/Clorox.  Here's to more overtime!

I was very tired and very sore when I got home on Friday.  I was sore all day yesterday too.  I am not used to working this hard, but I will get used to it.

On Saturday we went out to find a notary to take an acknowledgement on our Settlement Statement for our new closing date.  We had the document notarized at Wells Fargo Bank.  Our new closing date is Wednesday, May 9.

After we got home I checked my email and discovered that Park County Title sent me the old, previously signed docs.  Now I will have to try to go out during lunch tomorrow to get docs notarized again.  I wasn't able to leave on Friday, so I hope somebody can relieve me and run the column while I go out to do this.

We have started to casually browse houses for sale on Zillow.com.  We are not immediately ready to buy, but we want to have an idea of what types of houses are available in our price range.

Today we used the Anova sous vide cooker for the first time.  We made a couple of ribeyes and cooked them slowly for four hours at 135°F.  They turned out perfect!

Here comes Week Four at Avista, and I am looking forward to it.

Twenty-Five Years

25 years ago today, I flew to Orlando, Florida to begin my adventure with the US Navy.  What a time that was and man, how the years have flown past!

Today at work some of the items ordered for my labs were delivered.  I have the warning sign for the 400-to-413 door and I have the wall files for the log books.  The wall files were installed today.  Later I ordered about $1200 worth of furniture - stainless steel tables and equipment for the labs.

I got my first paycheck from Avista today.  80 hours of regular pay at $25.00 per hour, and 6 hours of overtime at $37.50 per hour.  The check is about $500 larger than the checks I got working at Burt's.

Each evening I come home tired.  The work isn't terribly hard, but you run around a lot because you don't know where things are, and there is a lot of nervous energy spent too.  It will get even better.

May Day

Today I took some rusty wire racks out of Lab 414 on a flat cart and delivered them to the dumpster.  Then I stopped in Room 700 and got gently-used, not-rusted wire racks to replace them.  These were stored unassembled, so I took this to my clean glassware room and parked them.

I started working on the Complexa project with Rick after that.  We basically did the same things that we did yesterday with the first half of the batch.  We worked until about noon, then broke for lunch.  I took about 15 minutes to eat, then I went to the clean glassware room to put the wire rack together.

I pulled the rack with casters out of there and moved it to the Washroom.  I installed rails on the backs of the shelves to keep glassware from falling off.  The plan is to put dry glass on this rack and roll the entire rack to the clean glassware room to put away, and then return the rack to the Washroom.  This won't even happen everyday, just when a project ends and there is labware that needed to be cleaned up.

In the afternoon Rick needed to order supplies for another project.  He had Jose come to 414 and he left us to follow the lab notebook and continue processing our batch.  I told him that we could do it, but that we would be working slowly and carefully.  We did fine.

Today I took some measurements for things that need to be purchased for the labs.  I have ordered a few things, but no furniture yet.

We are also going to be hiring three more manufacturing technicians soon.  We are going to bring our strength up to 8 - 10 technicians and chemists.
